Can Thalapathy Vijay Prove His Majority? TVK Chief Meets Governor Rajendra Arlekar to Stake Claim as Congress Sets Terms for Support

The political landscape of Tamil Nadu is witnessing a seismic shift. Following a historic debut in the 2026 Assembly elections, Thalapathy Vijay, the chief of Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), officially met with Governor Rajendra Arlekar on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, to stake his claim to form the next government.

While the “Vijay wave” has successfully breached the decades-old fortress of the DMK and AIADMK, the path to the Chief Minister’s chair is currently paved with complex arithmetic and high-stakes negotiations.

The Historic Verdict: TVK Emerges as the Single Largest Party

The 2026 Tamil Nadu election results have upended political predictions. Out of the 234 assembly seats, the TVK has won 108 seats, emerging as the single largest party in its very first electoral outing. However, the victory is bittersweet; Vijay’s party remains 10 seats short of the magic majority figure of 118.

The DMK, led by M.K. Stalin, saw its tally drop significantly to 59 seats, while the AIADMK secured 47 seats. The collapse of the traditional Dravidian duopoly has left the state in a “hung assembly” situation, placing the power of government formation squarely in the hands of the Governor and potential alliance partners.

The Meeting at Raj Bhavan

On Wednesday afternoon, Vijay arrived at the Raj Bhavan to meet Governor Rajendra Arlekar. During the meeting, which lasted approximately thirty minutes, the actor-turned-politician submitted a formal letter staking claim to form the government.

Vijay reportedly informed the Governor that he has the necessary support to provide a stable administration and requested an invitation for an oath-taking ceremony. Under constitutional norms, the Governor must now determine if the TVK-led bloc has the “prima facie” numbers to survive a floor test.

The Congress Gamble: Support with a ‘Secular’ Condition

In a dramatic turn of events, the Indian National Congress (INC)—which won 5 seats—has decided to ditch its long-term ally, the DMK, to back Vijay. This move brings Vijay’s count to 113, just 5 seats shy of the majority mark.

However, the Congress support is strictly conditional. AICC Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar and TNCC leaders have stated that their backing is contingent on the TVK keeping “communal forces” out of the alliance. Specifically, the Congress has mandated that Vijay must not seek or accept support from the BJP (which won 1 seat) or any party currently allied with the NDA.

“This alliance is founded on mutual respect and shared responsibility. We aim to bring back the ‘Golden Era’ of Kamaraj’s rule while adhering to the constitutional ideals of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and the social justice of Thanthai Periyar,” the Congress statement read.

The Missing Pieces: Who Will Provide the Last 5 Seats?

Even with the Congress on board, Vijay needs at least 5 or 6 more MLAs to reach the 118 mark. The TVK leadership is currently in deep discussions with several smaller parties and independents:

  1. The Left Parties: The CPI and CPI(M), with 2 seats each, are holding internal consultations. Given their ideological stance, they may lean toward a TVK-Congress front to keep the DMK out of power.
  2. VCK and Others: Thol. Thirumavalavan’s VCK (2 seats) and the PMK (4 seats) are currently the kingmakers. While the PMK has hinted at being open to a TVK-led government in exchange for ministerial berths, the VCK is wary of the shift in the political guard.
  3. Independents: There are reports of several independent candidates and disgruntled MLAs from the AIADMK camp who may jump ship to support the superstar.

The DMK and AIADMK Reaction

The DMK has reacted with sharp criticism, calling the Congress’s move a “betrayal” of the Secular Progressive Alliance. M.K. Stalin, who suffered a personal setback with reduced margins in his own stronghold, is reportedly weighing legal and political options to prevent a TVK-led government from taking office.

Meanwhile, AIADMK’s Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) is maintaining a strategic silence. While some AIADMK members have suggested supporting Vijay to ensure the DMK remains in the opposition, the formal stance of the party remains undecided.

What’s Next for Tamil Nadu?

The ball is now in Governor Rajendra Arlekar’s court. He has three primary options:

  • Invite Vijay as the leader of the single largest party and give him a specific timeframe (usually 15 days) to prove his majority on the floor of the House.
  • Ask for a physical parade or signed letters from all supporting MLAs (including Congress and others) before issuing an invitation.
  • Wait for the “opposition” (DMK and allies) to see if they can stitch together a larger coalition.

Conclusion: A Shift in the Political Paradigm

Regardless of whether Vijay crosses the finish line this week, the 2026 election has proved that the people of Tamil Nadu are ready for a third alternative. The “Thalapathy” brand has successfully translated from the silver screen to the polling booth. If he manages to navigate the demands of the Congress and the aspirations of smaller parties, Tamil Nadu may witness its first-ever Coalition Government led by a non-Dravidian party leader.

For now, the state waits with bated breath. The next 48 hours will determine whether “CM Vijay” becomes a reality or if the state heads toward a period of political instability.
