Sonam Raghuvanshi, the Indore woman arrested for allegedly murdering her husband Raja during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, will be taken to the crime scene today. Arrested by Uttar Pradesh Police at a dhaba in Ghazipur, Sonam had been on the run since the couple was first reported missing.

Meghalaya Police obtained a transit remand on Monday and are bringing Sonam back to the state to uncover the motive behind the murder, which occurred just 20 days after their marriage. Authorities recently discovered Raja’s body in a gorge, and investigations suggest Sonam attempted to fake her kidnapping. Police have dismissed her version as a “poorly executed plan.”

Sonam Raghuvanshi, arrested for the alleged murder of her husband Raja during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, claimed she had been “drugged” and taken to Ghazipur — a version of events the police do not believe. Uttar Pradesh Police’s Additional Director General (Law and Order), Amitabh Yash, told NDTV that Sonam tried to portray herself as a victim, knowing authorities were closing in.

“She informed her family she was at a dhaba on the Ghazipur-Varanasi road around 3 a.m. on Monday,” said Yash. “Her family then alerted Madhya Pradesh Police, who coordinated with local authorities and arrested her.” Following her arrest, Sonam was taken for a medical examination and later moved to a One-Stop Centre. Meghalaya Police are now questioning her and completing the required legal procedures.

The couple had been reported missing on May 23 during their trip to Meghalaya. Investigations have since revealed that Sonam allegedly conspired with her reported boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, to murder Raja. She is accused of hiring contract killers to carry out the crime, which resulted in Raja’s body being found in a gorge.

“Sonam was a poor planner. She had no understanding of police procedures and assumed she could get away by pretending to be a victim, but her plan failed,” said a senior Uttar Pradesh police official in an interview with NDTV. He added that the Meghalaya Police are doing commendable work and assured that UP Police would offer support if needed.

Meghalaya Director General of Police I. Nongrang confirmed that Raja Raghuvanshi was allegedly murdered by individuals hired by his wife, Sonam. So far, six people — including Sonam — have been arrested in connection with the case.

Raja and Sonam were reported missing on May 23 while vacationing in Sohra, located in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district.
