Hours after Jaishankar fact-checked the Republican leader on Monday, US President Donald Trump reiterated his comments on halting the India-Pakistan conflict. Trump’s most recent remarks were made in Scotland at a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Trump’s claims were made just hours after External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar clarified that there was no communication between Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi between April 22 and June 17. He also stated that there was no connection at any point during the discussions with the US between the halting of Operation Sindoor and trade.
According to Jaishankar, there were two phone conversations between Trump and Modi during that time. The first took place on April 22, when the US president denounced the terror attack in Pahalgam, and the second took place on June 17, when he called the prime minister to cancel a meeting in Canada.
Trump said he halted six major wars, including the May confrontation between India and Pakistan, while discussing the ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia on Monday.
“If I weren’t around, you’d have, right now, six major wars going on. India would be fighting with Pakistan,” Trump said.
Besides India-Pakistan conflict, Trump boasted about stopping wars between Cambodia and Thailand, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo and even a potential conflict between Serbia and Kosovo.
How about Gaza?
Reporters, however, questioned him about the current conflict in Gaza. He responded by saying that although the US is giving money, Hamas is allegedly stealing a large portion of it. Trump stated that one of the main goals of his discussion with Starmer was to find a solution to the Gaza problem.
India has consistently insisted that bilateral discussions between the two forces’ Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) led to the truce with Pakistan in May.
