BHUBANESWAR: The executive engineer of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) was arrested by the Vigilance on Thursday on suspicion of having disproportionate assets totalling 148% of his known salary.
The accused Jagannath Pattnaik has also been booked under terms of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, for illegal possession of a set of antlers.
The anti-corruption agency conducted raids at four locations on Wednesday and discovered assets worth over Rs 3 crore in Pattnaik’s and his family members’ names. A three-story building, two valuable plots in the Badagada neighbourhood of Bhubaneswar, one plot in Khandagiri, and two double-story buildings in Gunupur are among the assets.
In addition, the investigators located Pattnaik’s home in Ranapur Mouza, Balianta, which covered 1.57 acres. They also discovered that he had over Rs 80.35 lakh in mutual fund investments and bank and insurance accounts.
The assets also included one automobile, cash and household items valued at approximately Rs 7 lakh, and gold earrings weighing 460 grammes. In addition to them, a pair of antlers and a homemade firearm were discovered in his possession.
In November 1992, Pattnaik started working for Gunupur NAC as a junior engineer. In 2011, he became an assistant engineer at the BMC. In 2016, he was elevated to assistant executive engineer, and in 2024, he was made an executive engineer. Officials estimate he has about five years left in his service.
